The Danger Of Dealing With Dust In The Workplace

The overabundance of dust puts millions of workers at risk of exposure in their occupational lives every day. Whether it be related to working on roadways under construction, or putting in hours on the factory floor, there are countless dangers associated with this dust. While it may seem as though dust is harmless, in large volumes it can actually be incredibly dangerous. Organizations are aware that dust is a danger, which means being prepared with the right preventative measures is imperative to ensuring the health of their workers. It’s important to first understand the negative health effects that dust exposure can cause. Dust is linked to many serious health conditions. Something as simple as breathing in the tiny particles can lead to them becoming trapped, in turn causing reactions, inflammation and infection. This becomes even worse if the levels of toxicity in the dust are high. For example, through the processing of minerals, employees can find themselves interacting with toxic forms of dust — including silica and asbestos. Which, without surprise, contribute greatly to the number of annual worker deaths in these occupations. Knowing fatality is a common outcome in these industries, organizations are more concerned than ever with protecting their employees.
